Checking Engine Oil Pressure (Pre-checks)

  1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface.
  2. Warm up the engine.

    Note: If the vehicle has not been serviced for a long time, warm up the engine for approximately 20 minutes.

  3. Switch the engine off and wait 2–3 minutes, then check the engine oil level. This reading should be considered accurate.
  4. Make sure the oil level is within the range indicated on the dipstick. If it is below the low mark (“L”), add oil up to the full mark (“F”).

    Note: When topping up, use the same grade/type of oil that is already in the engine.

Replacing the Oil Filter

Selecting the Filter

All Hyundai engines are equipped with an oil filter in the lubrication system. This filter is recommended for use on these vehicles.

Caution: Be careful not to burn yourself; the engine and the oil may be hot.

  1. Using a wrench, remove the oil filter.
  2. Before installing the new oil filter, apply clean engine oil to the surface of the rubber gasket (seal).
  3. Screw the oil filter on by hand as far as possible.
  4. After the gasket contacts the seating surface, tighten the oil filter a further 3/4 of a turn.
  5. After stopping the engine, check the oil level and add oil if necessary.

Changing Engine Oil

Caution: Be careful not to burn yourself; the engine oil may be hot.

  1. Start the engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature.
  2. Switch the engine off.
  3. Remove the oil filler cap and the drain plug (oil pan), then drain the engine oil.
  4. Install and tighten the drain plug to the specified torque.

    Drain plug tightening torque: 35–45 N·m

  5. Fill the crankcase with fresh engine oil through the oil filler opening.
    • Dry fill: 4.0 L
    • Without filter: 3.4 L
    • With filter: 3.7 L
  6. Install the oil filler cap.
  7. Start the engine and let it idle.
  8. Stop the engine and check the oil level; add oil if necessary.

Compression Test

  1. Before checking compression, check the oil level in the engine oil pan. Make sure the starter and the battery are in good condition.
  2. Start the engine and wait until the coolant temperature reaches 80–95°C.
  3. Switch the engine off and disconnect the high-voltage leads from the spark plugs.
  4. Remove the spark plugs.
  5. Turn the crankshaft with a handle to remove any foreign particles from the cylinders.
  6. Install a compression gauge in the spark plug hole.
  7. Press the accelerator pedal to fully open the throttle.
  8. Crank the engine and read the compression gauge.

Specifications

  • Standard value (at 250–400 rpm): 15 kgf/cm²
  • Minimum (limit) value: 14 kgf/cm² (1.37 MPa)
  1. Repeat steps 6–8 for all cylinders and confirm that compression in each cylinder is within the specified limit.

    Maximum difference between cylinders: 1.0 kgf/cm² (100 kPa)

  2. If compression in any cylinder is below the limit, or if the difference between cylinders exceeds the limit, add a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and repeat steps 6–9.

Interpreting Results After Adding Oil

  1. If adding oil increases compression, a possible cause of low compression is excessive clearance between the piston rings and the cylinder wall due to wear.
  2. If compression does not change after adding oil, a possible cause of low compression is a leaking valve (poor valve-to-seat sealing) or combustion gas leakage through a faulty cylinder head gasket.
